King's Indian Defence Rules!!!

Corus Chess 2007 (Wijk aan Zee, NED) saw Radjabov scored 3.5/4 with his favorite King's Indian Defence (KID) including 100% wins over the most feared Bayonett Attack.

More details and analysis of the games can be seen at Chessbase.com
Round 1, van Wely 0-1, Classical, Bayonett Attack
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3610
Round 3, Shirov 0-1, Classical, Bayonett Attack
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3613
Round 11, Kramnik 1/2-1/2, Classical, Gligoric System
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3632
Round 12, Motylev 0-1, Classical
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3634

The KID had been suffering from some drawback since Kasparov stopped playing it during late 90s thanks to the Bayonett Attack with improvements by Kramnik! Yet, Radjabov had been playing it even suffering losses against Bareev back in 2002/03. (if not mistaken) and today, he had finally breakthrough with wins. I think KID will regain its popularity soon after this event.

Another bad news for adherents of Bayonett Attack from the White side is that, since Kramnik is not playing it against Radjabov at Corus, there might be some doubt in the line. I remember Kramnik still playing the Bayonett Attack during the Turin Olympaid which he got ONLY a draw against a 25++ player.

Seems like White's pawn sac at e6 square after Ng5, Ne6 and Black play Bxe6 is not so sufficient!

Lucky for me, I am playing both 1.d4 and 1.e4.

Until then,

Tactically Blackout!!

Fast Internet connection is not available at my house cause the phone line I am using at home is registered as an business entity so I can only apply for Streamyx with extra payment... As a result I cannot always play online chess and even if I do, I will most of the time, lost on time, get disconnected, etc, etc, thanks to the poor dial up connection. :-(

Chess Tactics Server (http://chess.emrald.net/) is one of the few solutions I can "afford"...
A snapshot of my handle at the server as follow...

My progress over there had been horrible recently. Don't know whether I am getting slower? Tactically blind? But my rating and success rate had dropped from 1667 to 1597 and 80.9% to 80.2% just within 1000 tries... seems like my goal of getting 1700 (rating) and 81% (success) by 10000 tries is moving further away weekly...

Until then,
Eu Hong

Review: Chess Training

First,
Book I am currently reading: Zurich International Chess Tournament 1953
Progress: Kind of slow as I take more than 30 minutes for each games so a full day(6~8 hours) of study only cover 2 or 3 rounds of the tournament and I am kind of busy for these 2 months...

Next,
Tactics, my progress at Chess Tactics Server is terrible with a lot mistake on the puzzles and thus leading to lower rating and lower success rate. Horrible! It seems like my goal of getting 1700 rating and 81% success rate by 10000 tries is going further away from me... More concerntration is required on the section!

Finally,
Analysis of my tournament games is in the queue. I had notated some of my USM (Team/Open) games so I will try to upload them over here after analysing them. They should be up soon...

Conclusion:
More concerntration is needed on the tactics section.

Until then,
Eu Hong

Visual Studio 2005... Finally...

Finally, we got our copies of Visual Studion 2005 Pro installed on our machines at work yesterday, after several steps of standard procedures to make the purchase for the team...

Most of the application, no matter web or not that was created by our team are either VB6 or ASP, sometimes even c/c++ with shareware compiler. It is time to move on with new technologies. New modules can be created easily with this new tool for example mobile device application, blue tooth, wifi... and thus making the system a centralised one and ease everyone's job...

Hopefully all the pre-planned projects can be carried out smoothly...

May the force be with us.

Until then,
Eu Hong

USM Open (Team), the Aftermath

The event concluded with following main prize winners...
1. Active Knights 23.5
2. MCE 21
3. Intel A 19.5
4. Sufiezul 19
5-6 Vandetta, Intel B 18.5
7-8 PFS A, Joga Bonito 18

the details should be up @ http://www.pca.bayanbaru.com anytime soon.

Post Mortem:
Again, MCE had to settle at 2nd place after losing to Active Knights on round 5 with 3-1.
Team Composition:
Board1: Tan Khai Boon 4.5/7
Board2: Anthony Liong 6.5/7
Board3: Loo Swee Leong 4/7
Board4: Tan Eu Hong 6/7

Process:
Round1: MCE(U15) vs MCE : 0-4
Round2: MCE vs Intel A : 3.5-0.5
Round3: Chung Ling A vs MCE : 1.5-2.5
Round4: MCE vs Super Gold Knight : 4-0
Round5: Active Knights vs MCE : 3-1
Jonathan Chuah - Tan Khai Boon: 1-0
Anthony Liong - Tan Hong Ghee: 1-0
Chuah Heng Meng - Loo Swee Leong 1-0
Tan Eu Hong - Khor Shi Hong: 0-1
Round6: MCE vs Intel B: 4-0
Round7: Vendetta vs MCE: 2-2

I started all my White games with 1.e4 for this event and things went okay until I forget my preparation (the preparation was made few years ago when I had to play Marcus Chan's Accelerated Dragon in GACC 2003 which I got a draw) and went into an inferior line against ShiHong and finally lost the game and sadly, my hope of getting the board prize went along with this lost as the winner of this encounter will get the board prize as well...

So the objective of breaking the Active Knights' champion streak had failed and the team finished 2nd again, which created the streak of Active Knights (champ) and MCE (2nd) for almost as long as MCE was formed...

Cheers,
Eu Hong

USM Penang Open ~ Team ~

Date: 20~21 Jan 07
Venue: USM Campus, Penang
Time Control: 45min per player, 7 rounds
Obj (Team): Champion
Obj (Personal):Board Prize (if I am playing on board4... the team captain haven't announce the lineup yet)

Tomorrow is another long awaited team event at Penang. The team objective looks unrealistic but with team members like Khai Boon, Swee Leong, and Anthony Liong, the team objective is actually reasonable.

Statistically, the team (Khai Boon, Swee Leong, and Anthony Liong) had not won the champion title before, they always finished second even with NM Ng Tze Han (USM 2006). This year, the strength of the team is some what reduced with me replacing NM Ng, the aim however is still high... Hopefully I can bring some luck to the team and bring home the title...

May the force be with us.

Cheers,
Eu Hong

Post Mortem:
My opening choice was not so successful for this event. The Catalan Opening seems too drawish and my preparation to start with 1.d4 is not sufficient. This was clear in my last round game against Stonmaster @ Fadli as I slowly let him equalize with his Dutch Stonewall Defence and handing over the initiative to him. Luckily his was kind enough to accept my draw offer and we end up getting 5th and 8th respectively.

However, a point to note is that my round 4 game against the top seed and eventual champion, Ronnie Lim was an interesting up and down struggle. I was having with white and playing the English Attack against his Sicilian Najdorf and putting pressure on him for most of the game until time pressure comes and during time trouble, I made a few blunder and was finally checkmated on the second rank!! with a few seconds left on my clock...

Thus I had met my initial objective of getting top10 in the final standing. I was seeded at 14 place, so getting 8th place was quite a good achievement...

Until next time,
Eu Hong

Planning @ 2007

Following a not-so-good plan is better than wondering without a plan.

Usually I will keep my plan to myself so that no one would know when those plans are not executed properly (sometimes not even executed). This year, however, I think announcing my plan would make me more determined!

On Career it is more towards a long term planning instead of a 1 year plan as experience and skills need time to develope. I had always dream of "retire" from IT development and head towards Application Architect kind of career path, and this dream really require a lot of determination, experience and expertise from different fields. So, first step toward this dream is, application for MBA!! Meanwhile, trying to acquire as much knowledge and skills throughout the year...

Next, on Chess... It had been a year since I last implemented my 2 years plan of chess improvement (refer to older post for the plan) back in July06, its time to revise on it after 6 months. The more obvious improvement of my chess playing strength was seen on tactical ability. The biggest headache is still with my inconsistency at tournaments, mostly due to the fact that I played way too little games compare to other strong players. Yet, I am going to cut my chess study hour to 50% to give way to other activities, e.g. MBA (if I am accepted) and work out on body fitness... So the plan will remain except time working on it will be shorter...

Finally, active mind comes along with healthy body... so work out will be part of my schedule for the coming 2 quarters to slim down myself... the plan is mainly on hiking, indoor soccer, and some "gym" like work out at home... an hour per day should be more than enough though...

Until then, may the force be with me to execute all those plans...

Cheers,
Eu Hong

New Year, New Tasks

Its be year 2007 since 8 days ago. New tasks, plans, and projects are now on hand after 2 weeks of holidays mood...

Windows Vista is becoming selling point so naturally I am assigned with customization of tools.

Yet another E-Commerce site is to be setup this year, again, I will be on my own doing all the technical stuff with my boss doing the talking with higher management...

Finally, the highlight of the year, namely converting our existing system to a web application to meet current business trend. This project will later stage leads to the upgrade of another system to merge into this with the objective of everyone using only one system...
